Lip blush is one of the most transformative permanent makeup services available — but the healing process can catch clients off guard if they're not prepared. The good news: once you know what to expect, the process is completely manageable and the results are absolutely worth it.
Here's a day-by-day guide to lip blush healing from Cynthia Irwin at Brow Expressions in Prescott, AZ.
Day 1: Right After Your Appointment
Immediately after your lip blush session, your lips will look significantly darker and more saturated than your final result. This is completely normal. The color you see on day one is not the color you'll have in 4–6 weeks — it will soften and lighten considerably as the skin heals.
You may also experience mild swelling, tenderness, and a feeling of tightness. Some clients experience more swelling than others — this is individual and not a cause for concern. Applying a cold compress (gently, without pressure) can help with swelling in the first few hours.
Your lips will feel dry and slightly chapped. Apply the aftercare ointment provided by Cynthia as directed — keeping the lips moisturized is important during this phase.
Days 2–4: The Darkest Phase
Days 2–4 are typically when the color looks its darkest. Your lips may feel tight, dry, and slightly uncomfortable. Continue applying your aftercare ointment regularly to keep them moisturized and prevent cracking.
You may notice the color looks uneven or blotchy during this phase — this is also normal. The pigment is still settling into the skin and the outer layer hasn't begun to peel yet.
Important: Do not pick, peel, or rub your lips during this phase. Let the skin heal naturally.
Days 5–7: Peeling Begins
Around days 5–7, the outer layer of skin on your lips will begin to peel. This is the most dramatic-looking phase of healing — and the one that surprises clients most. The peeling skin will look lighter than the skin underneath, and as it peels away, the color may appear to have faded dramatically.
Do not panic. This is completely normal. The color that's visible right after peeling is not the final result — the true healed color is still developing underneath.
Again: do not pick at peeling skin. Let it come off naturally. Picking can remove pigment that hasn't fully set yet, leaving patchy areas in the final result.
Weeks 2–3: The "Ghost Phase"
After the peeling is complete, many clients enter what's sometimes called the "ghost phase" — the lips may look very light, almost as if the color has completely disappeared. This is one of the most common reasons clients worry unnecessarily.
What's actually happening: the new skin that formed during healing is temporarily covering the pigment. As this layer continues to thin and mature over the next few weeks, the color will gradually resurface.
Weeks 4–6: The True Healed Result
By weeks 4–6, the true healed color emerges. This is when you'll see your actual lip blush result — softer, more natural, and more wearable than the initial dark color you saw right after the appointment.
Most clients are delighted at this stage. The color should look like a natural enhancement of your lip tone — not a lipstick, but a soft, beautiful tint that defines and brightens your lips.
The 6–8 Week Touch-Up
A perfecting touch-up at 6–8 weeks is a standard part of the lip blush process. After seeing the fully healed result, Cynthia can assess which areas healed lighter or need more definition, and refine the color and shape accordingly. This touch-up is what takes your lip blush from good to exactly right.
