If you have oily skin or mature skin and you've been hesitant about permanent brows — you're not alone. These are two of the most common skin types that walk through the door at Brow Expressions in Prescott, AZ, and they both come with the same concern: "Will this even work on my skin?"
The short answer is yes — and nano brows are specifically why.
Why Oily Skin Is Tricky for Permanent Brows
Oily skin produces more sebum — the natural oil your skin makes to stay moisturized. While this is great for preventing wrinkles, it's less great for permanent makeup. Here's why:
When pigment is deposited into the skin, it needs to settle and heal into the upper dermis. Oily skin tends to produce more oil during healing, which can push pigment out of the skin before it fully sets. This is why traditional microblading often fades faster — or heals patchy — on oily skin types.
Larger pores, which often accompany oily skin, can also cause hair strokes to look blurry or diffused as they heal, rather than crisp and defined.
Why Nano Brows Work Better on Oily Skin
Nano brows use a digital PMU machine with an ultra-fine single needle that deposits pigment at a consistent, controlled depth. Unlike microblading's manual blade — which creates wider cuts in the skin — the nano needle creates a much smaller channel for the pigment to settle into.
This means:
- ✦ Less surface trauma, so the skin heals more evenly
- ✦ More consistent pigment depth, which improves color retention
- ✦ Finer strokes that are less likely to blur in oilier skin
- ✦ Better long-term results — often lasting closer to 18–24 months even on oily skin
For clients who've had microblading fade in 6–9 months, or heal with a powdery, blurred look, nano brows are typically a significantly better outcome.
What About Mature Skin?
Mature skin presents a different set of challenges. As skin ages, it loses collagen and elasticity, which means the texture becomes softer and sometimes more fragile. Traditional microblading on mature skin can sometimes cause the strokes to spread slightly as they heal — a phenomenon sometimes called "blowouts" — resulting in a less crisp final look.
Nano brows address this because the ultra-fine needle causes significantly less lateral trauma to the skin. The strokes stay crisper, and the controlled machine depth prevents the kind of over-saturation that can cause spreading in softer skin.
Mature skin also tends to be drier, which is actually a positive for pigment retention — dry skin holds color longer than oily skin. Many mature clients are pleasantly surprised by how well their nano brows hold up.
Is Powder Brows a Better Option for Oily Skin?
It depends on the look you want. Powder brows (also called ombré brows) use a shading technique rather than individual hair strokes, which means they don't rely on crisp lines to look good. They tend to heal very well on oily skin and can last slightly longer than hair-stroke techniques.
If you prefer the look of filled-in, defined brows — similar to how you'd apply brow powder or pomade — powder brows are an excellent choice for oily skin. If you want the most natural, hair-like result possible, nano brows are the better fit.
