When Should You Remove Old Permanent Makeup Before New Brows?

Sometimes you can work over old PMU — and sometimes removal is the right call first. Here's how to know the difference.

One of the most common situations Cynthia encounters at Brow Expressions in Prescott, AZ: a client comes in wanting new nano brows or microblading — but they already have old permanent makeup that has faded, changed color, or simply doesn't look the way they want anymore.

The question is always the same: "Do I need to remove the old PMU first, or can you just work over it?"

The honest answer: it depends. Here's how to think about it.

When You Can Work Over Old PMU

In many cases, it's possible to work over old permanent makeup — especially if the existing pigment has faded significantly and hasn't changed to an unusual color. If your old brows are light, soft, and still within a natural brown or taupe range, Cynthia may be able to work over them with nano brows or powder brows to refresh and redefine the shape.

The key factors that make working over old PMU possible:

  • ✦ The existing pigment has faded to a light, natural tone
  • ✦ The shape is close to what you want (no major corrections needed)
  • ✦ The pigment hasn't shifted to a blue, grey, green, or orange tone
  • ✦ The skin texture in the brow area is still smooth and healthy

When PMU Removal Is Recommended First

There are situations where attempting to work over old PMU will produce a poor result — and in those cases, removal first is the right call. Here's when removal is typically recommended:

The pigment has shifted color

Old permanent makeup — especially microblading done with certain pigments — can shift to blue, grey, green, or orange tones over time. If your brows have taken on any of these undertones, working new pigment over them will not fully cover the discoloration. The old color will show through and affect the final result. Removal first gives you a clean slate.

The shape needs significant correction

If the existing brow shape is significantly different from what you want — wrong arch placement, too thick, too low, or asymmetrical in a way that can't be corrected by adding — removal is the better path. Trying to correct a major shape issue by working over old PMU often results in a compromise rather than the clean result you're looking for.

The pigment is still very saturated

If your old permanent makeup is still quite dark and saturated, the existing pigment will interfere with the new work. New pigment deposited over heavily saturated old pigment won't show true to color, and the result will be unpredictable. Lightening the existing pigment first creates a better canvas.

How PMU Removal Works at Brow Expressions

Cynthia uses a non-laser glycolic acid technique for PMU removal — a safe, effective method that uses a specialized solution to draw pigment out of the skin. This approach is gentler than laser removal and works well for most permanent makeup pigments.

Most clients see significant lightening in 1–3 sessions, depending on how saturated the original pigment is and how long it has been in the skin. Once the old pigment is sufficiently lightened, Cynthia can then apply fresh nano brows or powder brows on a clean, even canvas.

The removal process does require healing time between sessions, so planning ahead is important. If you're hoping to have new brows by a specific date, it's worth consulting with Cynthia early to understand the timeline.

The Consultation Is the Most Important Step

Every situation is different. The best way to know whether you need removal first — or whether Cynthia can work over your existing PMU — is to come in for a free consultation. She'll assess the existing pigment, discuss your goals, and give you an honest recommendation based on what will produce the best result for your specific situation.

There's no pressure and no obligation. Just an honest conversation about what's possible and what will look best on you.
